The broader Brisbane South community will benefit from free access to newly commissioned low-intensity psychological services.

Federal member for Forde, the Hon. Bert Van Manen MP (pictured right) formally announced on 28 August 2017 that Artius Group and Belong Community (formerly known as Acacia Ridge Community Support Inc.) were successful in tendering to deliver psychological services to support people who are experiencing early symptoms of mental ill-health or at risk of developing a mental health issue, and maintain positive mental health for people with moderate-to-severe pre-existing conditions at risk of relapse.

Mr van Manen said the new $650,000 program was part of a commitment to provide a wide range of mental health services to meet the specific needs of the local community. A diverse workforce made up of specially trained coaches, vocationally qualified mental health workers, consumer and carer peer workers, and tertiary trained clinicians will help people build resilience through regular telephone, online, group sessions and face-to-face contact.

Belong Community Vice President Jo Justo

Brisbane South PHN CEO Sue Scheinpflug welcomed the addition of Artius Group and Belong. “This is the first time targeted interventions have been provided to the people of our region that are aimed at improving the mental health of the wider community. By providing a preventative response to mental illness it is anticipated that the ongoing social, emotional and economic costs to individuals and the community will be reduced and that there will be an overall positive impact on the health system and other sectors,” Ms Scheinpflug said.

Referrals can be made by all members of the community (GP referral is not required) by contacting the service providers directly.
