Access to masks

Brisbane South PHN is distributing surgical masks to general practices, community pharmacies, respiratory clinics, medical deputising services and allied health providers as part of our response to the increased needs of our regions health sector.

Due to shortages in global stock, Brisbane South PHN is distributing additional surgical masks. Surgical masks have been provided by the Australian Government and supplies are limited. Surgical masks supplied by Brisbane South PHN are intended to be provided to general practices and, when no local commercial supply is available, allied health and community pharmacies:

  • for the protection of health professionals and practice/pharmacy staff in direct contact with people presenting with fever and/or respiratory symptoms including cough, sore throat and/or shortness of breath
  • for provision to people who are suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19, for the protection of other patients and staff, and of the public while the patient returns home.

Allied health professionals
On 19 April 2020, the Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, announced a one-off deployment of surgical masks from the National Medical Stockpile for allied health professionals.

This is a limited supply for allied health professionals who undertake work in such a way that they are in proximity to a patient for potential exposure to respiratory or oral secretions. This deployment of masks is intended for use only when services cannot be delayed for a symptomatic patient. PPE does not replace the need for modifications to practice such as telehealth and physical distancing. If a practitioner is unwell they should not see patients.

For further information about the distribution of PPE through PHN’s, please see the document here.

There is no need for the general public or health workers to wear masks unless they are dealing with symptomatic patients. Further guidance on the use of surgical masks in accordance with the AHPPC national guidelines on the prevention and control of coronavirus outbreak is available here.

Access to P2/N95 masks

These P2/N95 masks are restricted to General Practitioners who confirm they are undertaking specimen collection for COVID-19 in their surgeries.

P2/N95 masks have been provided by the Australian Government from the national emergency stockpile and stocks are limited. These masks will be issued to general practices undertaking specimen collections on a first come, first served basis, until stocks run out.
