Maternity Shared Care

Shared care is a joint arrangement to deliver maternity care by the General Practitioner (GP) and the specialist obstetrician or hospital-based obstetric unit. Shared antenatal care is an option for pregnant women with low risk. In special circumstances a high risk woman may be accepted into a shared care program, and would require close collaboration between GPs and the hospital. The advantages of GP maternity shared care are that:

  • Shared care provides the woman with a convenient and familiar provider of antenatal care
  • GP visits cement continuity of care, whilst ensuring institutional resources are used for secondary and tertiary care.

GPs participating in the Maternity Shared Care Alignment Program are expected to be familiar with guidelines and protocols and complete ongoing educational requirements. Brisbane South PHN is working in partnership with Mater and Metro South Health Services to conduct GP training seminars throughout the year.

To become a Shared Care GP

By completing a GP Maternity Shared Care Seminar (AM1) and passing the exam or attending an equivalent seminar, GPs can deliver shared care.

If GPs require to deliver shared care with hospitals in other catchment areas, then they need to complete an online bridging program module (maximum 30 minutes).
