Caring for First Nations peoples in general practice

General practice has an important role in providing culturally sensitive services to First Nations peoples. Service provision includes Indigenous health assessments for all age groups and best practice management of chronic disease. The following information enhances the capacity of mainstream general practice to deliver these important services.

1. Prepare the practice

2. Identifying patients of First Nations descent

3. First Nations health checks

4. Register eligible patients for the Indigenous Health Practice Incentives Program (PIP) and the Closing the Gap PBS co-payment

5. Use appropriate clinical guidance and programs from the RACGP, Medicare and PHNs to enhance access and quality of care

Social and emotional wellbeing services

Culturally appropriate health care services are available across our region for the local First Nations population through the Institute of Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) and Gallang Place Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Corporation.

Mental health, suicide prevention, alcohol and other drugs

IUIH and Gallang Place have been engaged by Brisbane South PHN to provide free mental health, alcohol and other drug treatment services and suicide prevention programs to our local indigenous communities.

The service assists patients, their family and referring health care provides to link up the patient’s care, no matter where it’s provided.

In addition to coordinating patient services, the IUIH ITC team assists patients by supporting them to:

  • access culturally appropriate mainstream services and required medical aids

  • arrange appointments and providing transport

  • ensure the patient’s health care team undertakes regular reviews.

Suicide prevention programs

Gift of Gallang is a primary school-based wellbeing program for First Nations children. The program is currently being delivered in Inala by Inala Wangarra Inc and will soon be extended to parts of Logan and Beaudesert.
Developed by the Inala community, the Gift of Gallang is a prevention program that fosters resilience and reduces the risk of youth suicide. Gift of Gallang takes a strengths-based approach to healing mind, body and spirit.

The 11 week program covers topics embedded in First Nations cultures and community protocols to build self-discovery, mindfulness, healing, connectedness, identity, spirituality, and self-determination. Gift of Gallang aims to foster a belief within children that they matter – to themselves, to others and to their community.
