Brisbane South PHN - Older people and Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD): Practical skills for community aged care providers

Event Owner: Brisbane South PHN

Event Description:
Are you working with older Australians in community or home-based aged care? This free, practical full-day workshop will build your confidence and skills to identify and respond to alcohol and other drug (AOD) related harm in older clients.

Alcohol and other drug use among older Australians is a growing but often overlooked concern. Older people face unique risks – including interactions with medications, chronic disease, and falls – that make early identification and supportive conversations particularly important.

AUDIENCE: Workers in community and home-based aged care settings. No prior AOD knowledge is required.

SPEAKERS:

Associate Professor Robert Ali (FAFPHM, FAChAM)
Professor Steve Allsop (PhD)

This workshop will help you to:

  • Recognise signs of AOD-related harm in older clients
  • Have effective, supportive conversations about AOD use
  • Know when and how to refer clients to appropriate support
  • Embed AOD awareness into your everyday practice

TIME:
Registration: 8:30 am
Start: 9:00 am
Finish: 4.00pm

COST: Free, morning tea and lunch will be provided.
