Brisbane South stakeholders come together to mark World Suicide Prevention Day
Hosted by Brisbane South PHN, the event showcased the impact of the Targeted Regional Initiatives for Suicide Prevention (TRISP) program and celebrated the collective efforts of organisations working to strengthen suicide prevention, wellbeing and community connection across Brisbane South.
Recognising the importance of connection and conversation
World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on 10 September, provides an opportunity to acknowledge the impact of suicide on individuals, families and communities, while reinforcing the importance of accessible support, strong partnerships and early intervention.
This year's theme, 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide – Start the Conversation', highlighted the role open, honest and compassionate conversations can play in supporting people experiencing distress and creating communities where people feel seen, heard and supported.
The event also coincided with R U OK? Day, providing a timely reminder that alongside systems, services and programs, simple acts of connection and checking in with others can play an important role in supporting mental wellbeing.
Celebrating the impact of the TRISP program
A key focus of the event was recognising the contribution of the TRISP program, which has supported a diverse range of community-led suicide prevention initiatives tailored to the unique needs of local communities across Brisbane South.
Attendees heard presentations from organisations delivering TRISP-funded projects, including initiatives supporting culturally and linguistically diverse communities, Pasifika and Māori communities, First Nations peoples, veterinary professionals, men, and community members impacted by suicide and loss.
Presenters shared achievements, challenges and learnings from delivering programs designed to increase awareness, strengthen protective factors, build community capability and improve access to support.
The presentations highlighted that the impact of TRISP extends beyond individual projects, with benefits continuing through stronger partnerships, improved referral pathways, increased community awareness, and enhanced capability within local organisations and communities.
The event reinforced the value of ongoing collaboration across the region and the important role communities, services and individuals all play in supporting mental health and wellbeing.
