Build triage and after-hours skills—Don't miss this one-off free training event in February

When a patient presents with concerning symptoms, every moment counts. Brisbane South PHN invites frontline staff, (including reception, nursing, and clinical team members) to join the free ‘Triage and After-Hours Essentials for Every Practice’ event in February 2026.

Participants will learn practical triage principles, understand key symptoms to be alert for, and strengthen their readiness when responding to unwell or deteriorating patients. 

About the ‘Triage and After-Hours Essentials for Every Practice’ event

Delivered by Barry McCarthy, a Registered Nurse, Paramedic and an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist with more than 30 years’ experience, the session explores real-world scenarios and essential steps to support safe, timely decision-making in your practice. 

This interactive training event can support your practice team to feel confident in recognising urgent presentations, prioritising care, and responding effectively from the first point of contact. 

The course will cover:

• how to respond when an unwell patient presents at reception or in the waiting room

• effective triage steps to categorise urgency and prioritise care to where it is immediatley needed

• how to manage a deteriorating patient 

• referral pathways for directing patients after hours or when immediate treatment is not possible 

• simple steps to keep your team calm, coordinated and prepared.
