GP-to-GP referrals — supporting timely access to appropriate services for your patients

In general practice, it’s not uncommon for a patient to present needing a focused therapeutic service or procedure that sits just outside the scope of the consulting general practitioner (GP), but does not require referral to specialist care. In these situations, referral to a GP colleague can support timely, locally delivered care while maintaining continuity with the patient’s usual GP.

The GP-to-GP Referrals page on Brisbane South HealthPathways is a list of local GPs who can offer their specific procedural or therapeutic services to other GPs' patients without obligation to continue care. This means the service is provided and the patient is returned to the referring GP for follow-up.

GP services listed on the GP-to-GP Referrals page include iron infusions, skin lesion excisions, IUD insertion and removal, and other procedures that sit within primary care.

By enabling direct referral to GP colleagues with relevant skills, this pathway helps keep low‑acuity, low‑complexity care within primary care, supporting timely access to appropriate services for patients.

Benefits of GP-to-GP referrals

GP-to-GP referrals provide an option when patient care sits outside an individual GP’s scope but remains within primary care capability. This can be particularly helpful for GPs working in smaller or solo practices. Referring to a GP colleague can support timely access to care, with patients returned to the referring GP for follow‑up once the service has been provided.

GPs who provide procedural or therapeutic services and are willing to accept referrals from other GPs are encouraged to complete the online listing request.

Being listed helps strengthen local GP networks and makes it easier for colleagues to identify appropriate referral options within primary care.
