Have your say: Allied health professionals
Allied health professionals are an integral part of the primary healthcare system, delivering person-centred, preventive and multidisciplinary care, both independently and within general practice settings.
Brisbane South PHN and Allied Health Professions Australia (AHPA) are working together to better understand the needs and priorities of allied health workers in the Brisbane South PHN region.
AHPA is a national peak body that works to:
achieve broad benefits for the allied health sector
optimise the role of allied health professionals in the healthcare system.

Why is this work so important?
The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing's Primary Health Care 10 Year Plan (2022–2032) recognises allied health professionals as an essential workforce in delivering person‑centred, preventive, and multidisciplinary care within primary health care.
The plan highlights the need for a greater focus on allied health to better integrate services and improve access, quality, and health outcomes, moving beyond a solely GP‑centric model. In action, this looks like team‑based, integrated care models, where allied health professionals work alongside general practitioners (GPs), nurses, and pharmacists to deliver coordinated care that is tailored to community needs.
The plan recognises allied health professionals as critical players in health system reform over the coming decade, particularly in prevention, chronic disease management and improving equitable access to care.
PHNs are well-placed to support allied health integration by facilitating better coordination between:
GPs
allied health providers
hospitals services.
How Brisbane South PHN is working to support allied health professionals
Brisbane South PHN works to support allied health professionals in their work through practical tools, training and practice support designed to strengthen day-to-day clinical work. This includes access to Brisbane South HealthPathways, which offers local referral guidance and service information at the point of care, as well as CPD-accredited education, workshops, and digital learning through platforms like DiscoverPHN.
We continue to work to promote multidisciplinary team care, support allied health referral pathways, and encourage the use of care plans (e.g., Chronic Condition Management plans) to better meet the needs of patients.
Thank you to our allied health partners already working with us
Primary health professionals contribute to many of our commissioned programs, with a high number of allied health professionals commissioned through Brisbane South PHN-funded mental health, alcohol and other drugs, and suicide prevention services. These services help to:
deliver health and wellbeing services to population groups with the greatest needs, including those with mild to complex needs
work within multidisciplinary care models to provide high-quality wrap-around care to patients.
Thank you to all the allied health professionals and administration staff who dedicate their time and skills to care for the health and wellbeing of our community. Our region is stronger and healthier because of you.
We encourage you to share your experiences of working with us and our community by taking our online survey.
