Looking back on our 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day event
On Wednesday 10 September 2025, Brisbane South PHN brought together more than 50 professionals from over a dozen organisations across our region at Nathan in the south of Brisbane, to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.
This year’s theme, Changing the Narrative on Suicide, reminds us that while World Suicide Prevention Day is a global initiative, change begins locally, through the connections we foster and the actions we take within our own communities. So much of what we can achieve, and what we have already successfully achieved has been through the meaningful work and partnership of service providers, local community connectors and mental health advocates.
Together our work has been able to break down stigma, strengthen community trust in health care services, and ensure that people in our region can:
feel confident and empowered to seek mental health care
feel valued, understood, and supported by the mental health and suicide prevention services available to them
have access to a stronger, more connected, integrated service system.
About our World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 event
The day began with a grounding Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony from Tribal Experiences’ Shannon and Tim. We’d like to express our heartfelt thanks to Shannon and Tim for setting the tone of the day, for their warm welcome and their generosity in sharing their knowledge.
The event included a wide range of professionals from across the mental health, suicide prevention and alcohol and other drug services sector, each sharing the important work they’re doing to support individuals, families, and communities.
The panel discussion with Wesley Mission Queensland and Metro South Health showcased how their organisations harness the power of partnerships and collaboration to make a tangible, positive outcomes for people and families navigating mental health challenges.
Feedback from the day reflected the importance of recognising World Suicide Prevention Day and the value of creating opportunities for passionate professionals to come together and learn from each other.
Thank you to all presenters, stall holders and attendees for your contributions and presence.
Brisbane South PHN’s joint vision of a more connected and responsive health system
In July 2025, Brisbane South PHN and Metro South Health launched the Brisbane South Joint Regional Plan. The plan aims to enhance mental health and wellbeing services across the region by addressing key areas including suicide prevention and workforce sustainability and development.
By strategically developing and supporting a skilled, diverse and stable workforce that reflects community needs and values lived-living experience, we aim to ensure high quality, accessible mental health, suicide prevention, alcohol and other drug services for everyone in our region.
We are committed to building the capacity of our region's health workers to develop and implement appropriate interventions and strengthen the communication, coordination and integration of suicide prevention services.
