Mpox vaccinations — Updates to clinical guidance

Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) wishes to advise General Practitioners and other vaccine providers of updated recommendations for mpox prevention.

ATAGI now recommends:

  • pre-travel vaccination for anyone (regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity) who may undertake sexual risk activities during travel to locations with transmission of clade I mpox

  • people of all ages who are at risk of exposure to mpox to receive the mpox vaccination.

Access further details about mpox vaccination in the Australian Immunisation Handbook mpox chapter.

Mpox cases remain in Queensland

Primary health professionals remain at the forefront of managing the ongoing mpox outbreak in Australia. The Department of Health and Aged Care continues to advise GPs and vaccine providers to remain proactive in addressing this ongoing public health concern.

The National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System confirms that as of 8 January 2024, there have been 48 confirmed cases of mpox notified in Queensland since 1 October 2024.

Please contact the Metro South Public Health Unit if there is a suspected or confirmed case of mpox.

How to become a vaccine service provider for mpox?

There is no specific certification to administer mpox vaccines. Any vaccine service provider can administer JYNNEOS vaccines (health.gov.au).

The order form is available from Queensland Health: Immunisation Program Vaccine Order Form.

If your practice is prepared to receive stock and offer mpox vaccination, it will be added to the mpox vaccine clinic finder.
