Nurse Re-entry Program — Paid, supervised placements available
The Nurse Re-entry Program is a national Australian Government initiative that will support up to 500 previously registered enrolled nurses (ENs) and registered nurses (RNs) back to the nursing workforce and facilitate more nurse practitioners (NPs) training and working in primary care, through the completion of paid, supervised placements in general practice.
General practices will receive a single lump-sum payment of $2,000 to support the facilitation of placements for provisionally registered ENs, RNs, NP students and qualified NPs transitioning to work in primary care.
Supporting a nurse to re-enter the workforce helps expand your practice team’s capabilities and improve access to care in your community.
About the Nurse Re-entry Program
The Nurse Re-entry Program aims to assist nurses who haven’t practised in the last 5 or more years to return to the workforce through paid, supervised placements in general practice.
The program also supports nurse practitioners who are transitioning into general practice and benefits general practices by expanding the capabilities of practice teams and building nurse capacity in-house.
Through the program, eligible nurses are matched with accredited general practices to:
complete their placement

meet Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements
regain full registration.
Accredited practices that host a nurse can receive a $2,000 grant to support facilitation of the placement. There is no obligation to employ the nurse permanently after the placement is complete.
The Nurse Re-entry Program will run until 30 June 2027.

Wentworth Healthcare, provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network (PHN) is leading the national delivery of the Nurse Re-entry Program on behalf of all PHNs for the Australian Government.
