Host a student nurse in your general practice
The Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) is seeking primary healthcare services wanting to host undergraduate and postgraduate student nurses for clinical placement hours, as part of the National Nursing Clinical Placement Program and Aged Care Clinical Placement Program.
This program places student nurses under the supervision of registered nurses in primary health care settings, allowing established professionals to share their professional knowledge with student nurses while also establishing ties with prospective future employees.
How to host a student nurse in your practice or workplace
Primary healthcare services with a registered nurse on site are invited to participate in APNA’s clinical placement programs.
Eligible hosts include general practices, aged care facilities, healthcare services that offer a unique area of practice such as sexual health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, mental health, community outreach, or other distinctive service models.
APNA will connect student nurses with practice settings that reflect their interests, values, and career aspirations to ensure students arrive motivated, engaged, and ready to contribute, while your primary care team benefits from hosting learners who are genuinely invested in your specialty area of practice.
Benefits of hosting student nurses
APNA will pay primary healthcare workplaces $50 per day per student, with most placements being 2 to 4 weeks in duration (which would equal $500 to $1,000 per placement).
APNA trains supervising nurses for free, ensuring they’re confident to host students, with full support throughout the placement.
Hosting workplaces don’t need to have any agreements with any education providers, just one agreement with APNA.
There is no need to change any of the clinic’s insurance as education providers cover students’ insurance.
Nurse Re-entry Program — Your practice can receive a $2,000 grant to have a nurse re-enter the workforce
The Nurse Re-entry Program aims to assist nurses who haven’t practised in the last 5 or more years to return to the workforce through paid, supervised placements in general practices.
Re-Entry nurses are not students, and must be employed as part of your practice staff.
Accredited practices that host a nurse can receive a $2,000 grant to support facilitation of the placement. There is no obligation to employ the nurse permanently after the placement is complete.
The program also supports nurse practitioners who are transitioning into general practice and benefits general practices by expanding the capabilities of practice teams and building nurse capacity in-house.
Through the program, eligible nurses are matched with accredited general practices to:

regain full registration.
