Queensland Health invites GPs to have a say on a new name for satellite hospitals

General practitioners (GPs) are invited to have their say on renaming the state’s 7 satellite hospitals and to ensure the role they play within the broader healthcare network in Queensland is better understood.

  • An online survey is open from 18 November to 20 December and only takes a few minutes to complete.

  • Survey feedback will be provided to a clinical advisory group to inform the decision-making process.

  • Consultation with clinicians is part of the Queensland Government’s 100-day plan.

About the newly appointed Queensland Government’s 100-day plan

The Liberal National Party (LNP) of Queensland has outlined a 100-day plan to deliver Queensland a fresh start. As part of its plan, the newly elected Queensland Government has committed to consulting with local health care professionals in order to rename the satellite hospitals. This process will ensure the new names reflect the transformative care offered in these facilities and will encapsulate the role they play within the broader healthcare network. To support this plan, a consultation process on the future name of satellite hospitals is currently underway.

Satellite hospitals in the Brisbane South PHN region

The Brisbane South PHN region currently has two satellite hospitals:

  • Redlands Satellite Hospital (Talwalpin Milbul – a name chosen by the Redlands Coast community and local Traditional Owners and Elders meaning ‘Redland Bay alive/ active’ in Jandai language)

  • Eight Mile Plains Satellite Hospital (Maroo-goodji-ba – a name chosen by the community and local traditional Owners and Elders meaning ‘peace, wellbeing and place of red earth’ in the Yagarabul language).

Both satellite hospitals provide convenient access to healthcare without the need to travel to a major hospital for non-emergency care. For more information on our region’s satellite hospitals visit, Redland Satellite Hospital, Eight Mile Plain Satellite Hosptial or find out more from our overview of Eight Mile Plains Hospital services flyer.

How will the survey results make an impact?

A clinical advisory group will review the survey results and provide recommendations to the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services by mid-January for consideration. The 7 satellite hospitals will continue to provide the same level and quality of healthcare services, including scheduled appointments and urgent care for minor illnesses and injuries. https://www.metrosouth.health.qld.gov.au/services/minor-injury-and-illness-clinic/minor-injury-and-illness-clinic-redlands-satellite-hospital-talwalpin-milbul.
