Introducing the Practitioner’s Toolkit for Managing Menopause

One in 4 women and gender diverse people have experienced moderate to severe perimenopausal symptoms that negatively impact their quality of life. Despite this prevalence, patients still face barriers to accessing appropriate care. Dr Karen Magraith, GP and former president of the Australasian Menopause Society, said that it can be difficult for patients to find a well-trained GP who feels confident discussing menopause and treatment options. About the free Practitioner's Toolkit for Managing Menopause

The Practitioner’s Toolkit for Managing Menopause, developed by the Women’s Health Research Program in the Monash University School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, meets the needs of clinicians by providing clear, evidence-based advice to help address and manage symptoms of, or concerns about menopause during clinical consultations.

The toolkit can help clinicians to:

  • assess menopausal status of patients, including those with a past hysterectomy or endometrial ablation, and users of hormonal contraception
  • identify treatment options
  • enhance symptom management.

This toolkit was created with advice based on contemporary knowledge around the physiological basis of menopause and new therapeutics, as well as issues of bone health.

It also provides clear evidence-based guidance on the appropriate use of menopause hormone therapies (MHT) and non-hormonal therapies for patients with menopause-associated symptoms.
