World Cancer Day 2025 — Is your general practice integrated with the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR)?

Tuesday 4 February 2025 marks World Cancer Day. In Queensland, over 32, 000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year. General practices and primary healthcare providers are well-placed to encourage Queenslanders to undergo screening.

Further, the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) aims to streamline how healthcare providers manage cancer screening data. We estimate round 65% of general practices in the Brisbane South PHN region have integrated their software with the NCSR, helping provide a safety net for at-risk individuals so general practices are best placed to follow-up and care for their patients who need it most.

Brisbane South PHN have dedicated coordinators who can support you to use the NCSR portal. Please call 3864 7540 or email support@bsphn.org.au to arrange a visit from one of our friendly coordinators.

About the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR)

Clinicians can access their patients’ cancer screening information and submit program forms directly to the NCSR through their practice’s clinical software. Learn more about the NCSR and its benefits on their website.

Practices using MedicalDirector or Best Practice can integrate their systems to access a patient’s bowel and cervical screening records directly within the patient record.

Incorporating the NCSR into your practice helps to:

  • provide a history of screening results to better track patients' past screening outcomes

  • ensure timely participation in screening programs by sending patients reminders

  • provide a safety net for at-risk individuals so practices are best placed to follow-up and care for their patients who need it most.

The NCSR Hub aims to provide you with greater visibility of your patient’s screening status to help prompt important discussions about cancer screening.

It allows providers and practice staff to access screening information, including your patient’s screening history and results, overdue and follow-up alerts, and submit demographic and clinical updates to the NCSR.

You can also facilitate bowel screening test completion by recording when you have issued a program test kit to a patient during a consultation, or if you have ordered a kit to be mailed to your patient’s address.
