BSPHN Deeper Dive into Dialectical Behaviour Therapy to Work Well with BPD

Event description

This will be an experiential and practical in person workshop giving real world and evidence based strategies based in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Strategies you can apply straight away to improve engagement, care and interventions for those with Borderline Personality Disorder and keep your own sanity for time poor GPs. You will also have a better understanding of the treatment options for this population.

This one day in person training will cover:

  • Key features of BPD, teasing apart co-occurring diagnoses and having ideas how to approach managing multiple diagnoses, including what role pharmacotherapy can play
  • The Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) understanding of BPD and emotional dysregulation, and how to apply this. And what is DBT really?
  • What is a dialectic and why they are useful in working well with people with BPD
  • Clinical approaches and interview skills that are also therapeutic and doable by any clinician
  • Learn practical DBT skills to use with distressed or emotional clients
  • A practical explanation of an abbreviated behaviour chain analysis and why & how I can use this in my practice
  • Chronic suicidality and non-suicidal self injury- identification and evidence based responses
  • Q&A session- chance to hear from and ask questions of people with lived experience; from the presenters with experience of public and private sector work, including a medical officer, all specialising in working with BPD and affiliated disorders

Presenters: Training is delivered by Metro South DBT Workforce Development Officers, Kathy Madson, Regan Davis and Natasha Briffa jointly with a psychiatrist and psychotherapist having extensive experience in public health and private practice with patients with complex presentations and personality disorders, Dr Sigi Gutjahr.

Dr Sigrun Gutjahr

Sigi is an adult psychiatrist and psychotherapist. She is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and a member of the Faculty of Psychotherapy. She currently works in the public sector at Gold Coast HHS as a clinical lead for Project AIR, a program for treatment of BPD and as teacher and supervisor in psychotherapy. She supervises a psychotherapy training clinic for psychiatric registrars to facilitate ongoing experience in psychotherapy.

In her private practice her focus is psychotherapy and application of different models in patients with complex presentations and personality disorders. She holds a Masters in Psychotherapy in Psychiatric Practice (UQ)

For those wishing to attend this course, attendance at a 90 minute webinar (Working Better with Borderline Personality Disorder with a DBT Lens) is a prerequisite. You will need to register for one of the following online sessions.

AUDIENCE: This in person training is for General Practitioners and general practice based nurses working in the Brisbane south region wanting CPD opportunities in mental health and Borderline Personality Disorder in particular.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Distinguish the clinical features of Borderline Personality Disorder and common presentations in general practice
  • Explain how BPD develops using the biosocial developmental model
  • Determine key dialectical approaches to BPD and apply treatment pathways
  • Apply core skills in working well with BPD through communication and consultation, self care and behavioural strategies to manage challenging situations
  • Generate suicide risk evaluation in BPD to communicate and implement appropriate responses
  • Explain the role of pharmacotherapy in treatment of BPD

This is an approved CPD Activity

This education is a CPD Activity under the RACGP CPD Program and also FPS CPD. FPS providers of Better Access Focused Psychological Strategies (FPS) services, and are required to complete 6 hours of FPS CPD each triennium. GP members of ACRRM and RANZCOG can self-record this activity via their relevant CPD portal ACRRM and RANZCOG. Practice Nurses will receive a certificate of attendance for reporting CPD eligibility.
