Event Description: Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services and Brisbane South PHN invite General Practitioners and practice nurses in Brisbane South region to participate in this online workshop Working Well with Borderline Personality Disorder - with a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Lens.

This FREE CPD Activity under the RACGP CPD Program for GPs and practice nurses will give you the basics of understanding Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), practical ideas and more confidence in working with people with this disorder, informed by the extensive experience of the trainers.

The training will cover:

• key features of BPD and an overview of how Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) conceptualises emotional dys-regulation - how this can change our understanding and approach to patients
• recognising the patient with BPD and having options to respond more effectively to their care needs- assessment, pharmacotherapy, treatment pathways and comorbidities
• practical clinical engagement strategies and techniques to implement that will work better with this population- why ‘practice as usual’ may not work
• a foundation in a risk assessment system for responding to presentations with suicidality and non-suicidal self-injury and communicating risk to other providers and your documentation
• responding to problematic behaviours effectively such as those interfering with the clinician and practice functioning
• An opportunity for General Practitioners and practice nurses questions to be answered

Continuing Professional Development
This online webinar is for General Practitioners and practice nurses working in the Brisbane South region wanting CPD opportunities in mental health and Borderline Personality Disorder in particular.
This is an RACGP-approved CPD activity under the RACGP Program - Educational activities hours: 1.5 hr. GPs, please provide your RACGP number when registering to be allocated points for this activity.

A follow up 1 day face to face training workshop for General Practitioners and practice nurses will be delivered on 27 June 2026 at Brisbane South PHN office (Eight Mile Plains) for those seeking a deeper level of skill and knowledge in this area (This face to face training session is a CPD Activity under the RACGP CPD Program)
Attendance at one of the online DBT webinars is a prerequisite to attending the face-to-face workshop.

Presenters: Training is delivered by Metro South DBT Workforce Development Officers, Kathy Madson, Samantha Caldwell, and Natasha Briffa jointly with a psychiatrist and psychotherapist having extensive experience in public health and private practice with patients with complex presentations and personality disorders, Dr Sigi Gutjahr.

Dr Sigrun Gutjahr

Sigi is an adult psychiatrist and psychotherapist. She is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and a member of the Faculty of Psychotherapy. She currently works in the public sector at Gold Coast HHS as a clinical lead for Project AIR, a program for treatment of BPD and as teacher and supervisor in psychotherapy. She supervises a psychotherapy training clinic for psychiatric registrars to facilitate ongoing experience in psychotherapy.

In her private practice her focus is psychotherapy and application of different models in patients with complex presentations and personality disorders. She holds a Masters in Psychotherapy in Psychiatric Practice (UQ)
