State-funded meningococcal B vaccination program for infants and adolescents begins March 2024

Queensland Health wishes to advise that the state-funded infant and adolescent meningococcal B (menB) vaccination program begins in March 2024.

The Queensland MenB Vaccination Program aims to remove financial barriers to vaccination, improve vaccine uptake, and improve the protection that menB vaccination provides against meningococcal disease.

Vaccine deliveries to Queensland Health registered vaccination service providers begin from mid-February 2024.

The following Queensland residents will be able to access free menB vaccine through this program:

  • infants 6 weeks to 12 months of age (3 doses)
  • catch-up vaccination for children aged over 12 months to less than 2 years (2 doses)
  • adolescents aged 15 to 19 years (inclusive) (2 doses).

This eligibility reflects the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation’s (ATAGI) menB recommendations for infants and adolescents.

First Nations children (less than 2 years of age) and people with specific medical risk factors for invasive meningococcal disease are currently eligible for free menB vaccine through the National Immunisation Program (NIP).
