Have your say: Potential changes to the accreditation of general practices

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) is seeking feedback on potential changes to the National General Practice Accreditation (NGPA) Scheme.

General practice accreditation plays an important role in ensuring high-quality, safe, and effective care in general practice This is your chance to voice your opinion on how the accreditation process could be improved to better support general practices and practice teams.

What are the proposed changes to accreditation?

Consultation is now open for people working in general practice to share their views on 2 proposed changes:

  1. Extending the accreditation cycle Practices would undergo accreditation less frequently but with at least one mid-point review to maintain quality and safety standards.

  2. Short-notice assessments Accreditation assessments would occur with minimal prior notice, aiming to provide a more accurate reflection of day-to-day practice operations.

Why your input matters

General practice accreditation is more than just a compliance exercise. Accreditation is about fostering continuous improvement, enhancing patient safety, and ensuring practices have the support they need to deliver high-quality person-centred care. Providing your insights will help to:

  • ensure any changes to accreditation support high-quality care while minimising unnecessary burden on practices

  • shape a healthcare system that works for you and your patients.

Here’s how you can provide your feedback

The public consultation is open until Friday 4 April 2025, 11:59 PM AEDT.
