The Initial Assessment and Referral-Decision Support Tool (IAR-DST) for mental healthcare is an initiative of the Department of Health and Aged Care. The support tool assists health professionals determine the most appropriate level of care a person will need across 5 levels of care.

The release of Version 2 includes new and revised versions of the Initial Assessment and Referral Guidance documentation and Decision Support Tool. There are separate rating guides available for use with:

  • children (aged 5-11)
  • adolescents (aged 12-17)
  • adults (aged 18-64)
  • older Adults (aged 65 and over).

Please note that while the IAR uses age to determine which rating guide to use, the final decision should be based on the clinical judgment of the user, considering contextual and developmental factors.
