Help end HIV transmission—Learn how easy it is to prescribe PrEP today
General practitioners (GPs) and nurse practitioners have an incredibly vital role helping Australia achieve the virtual elimination of HIV transmission by 2030.
A new webpage from the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM) highlights how Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is one of the most effective tools available for HIV prevention. Research has shown PrEP can reduce the incidence of HIV by up to 92% over 3 years compared to the historically expected incidence.
ASHM’s new webpage provides practical resources to support clinicians in raising awareness, initiating conversations, and prescribing PrEP with confidence.
How GPs and nurses can expand the access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
PrEP is an antiretroviral medication that can be taken once daily or on demand. Importantly, GPs and nurse practitioners can prescribe PrEP without specialist training, making it a straightforward option to incorporate into routine primary care.
PrEP can be discussed during everyday consultations where appropriate. A quick, confident conversation is often all it takes to help a patient access this life-changing medication.
Prescribing PrEP can typically be completed in just 4 simple steps within one consultation.
View the ASHM webpage for quick and comprehensive information about:
who PrEP is for
when to bring up PrEP in conversation
how to respond if a patient asks about PrEP
