Local GP and general practice take top honours at RACGP Awards
Brisbane South PHN extends heartfelt congratulations to the exceptional general practitioners (GPs) and practices recognised at the 2024 Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Awards.
Celebrating excellence in general practice
The annual RACGP Awards recognise excellence in general practice across categories including national, state, rural, and First Nations health awards.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday 20 November in Perth, recognised GPs, registrars, supervisors, medical educators, and general practices that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to improving the health outcomes of Australians.
RACGP President Dr. Nicole Higgins said the awards are an opportunity to highlight the exceptional contributions of GPs and their teams.
“These wonderful ambassadors for our profession are further proof there is no substitute for the care of a GP who knows you and your history’, said Dr. Higgins [1].

Local GP and former RACGP Vice President, Dr. Bruce Willett has been named the 2024 Rose-Hunt Award recipient, the highest accolade bestowed on individuals by the RACGP.
The prestigious award recognises Dr Willett’s exceptional contributions to general practice, particularly in education and advocacy [3].
Receiving the award at the ceremony on Wednesday, Dr. Willett described general practice as ‘the best profession in the world’ and said he felt humbled by the recognition.
‘As with every award, there are thousands of people, GPs, who do extraordinary things every day unheralded. To that extent, I feel extraordinarily lucky’, he said [1].
Dr. Willett’s achievements include guiding RACGP’s leadership efforts through the Covid-19 pandemic, advocating for fair payroll tax changes for Queensland general practices [3].
An enthusiastic proponent of multidisciplinary team-based (MDT) care approaches, Dr Willett has also contributed his expertise and experience to support Brisbane South PHN in piloting new models of MDT care with local general practices, including incorporating non-perscribing pharmacists into general practice teams for improved medicines safety and patient experiences of care.

Growlife Medical co-founder Dr. Aaron Chambers attributed the practice’s success to a collective effort.
'General practice is a team sport, and it is just so rewarding to work with a team who have a shared vision and a culture that is all about patient care, and thinking outside our clinic walls to focus on delivering for our local community’, said Dr. Chambers [3].
