Primary health care nursing and midwifery survey — Have your say

The Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association’s (APNA) annual workforce survey is now open.

This is the only national survey focusing exclusively on nurses and midwives working outside of our hospitals and in the community.

The aim of the survey is to better understand primary health care nurses and midwives and their work. Insights gathered from the survey will then be used to inform policy, advocacy and practice.

The survey takes about 30 minutes to complete. Completed surveys go into a draw to win either a $1000 Red Balloon vouchers or a $100 cash card.

Who should take APNA’s workforce survey?

The survey is open to all nurses and midwives working in non-hospital settings. This includes midwives, enrolled nurses, registered nurses and nurse practitioners working in:

  • general practice
  • community health
  • residential care
  • correctional services
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health organisations
  • schools
  • defence.

You do not need to be an APNA member to complete the survey.

How your survey responses are used

Last year, the 2023 APNA workforce survey results were used to:

  • secure $4.2m for the National Nursing Clinical Placements Program to help grow the next generation of primary health care nurses and address the workforce shortage

  • respond to the Unleashing the Potential of our Health Workforce - Scope of Practice Review, with the aim of greater job satisfaction for health professionals, as well as improved recruitment and retention of nurses working in primary care

  • successfully support changes to federal legislation that enabled the removal of the collaborative arrangement requirement. This enabled nurse practitioners and midwives to work to their full scope of practice.
