Free CPD activities now available for GPs caring for people dying at home
Having the confidence and skill to provide expert care at the end stages of a patient’s life requires both sensitivity and experience. Opportunities to sharpen these skills through CPD activities and further education can mean a more positive and meaningful experience for clinicians, patients and families.
To support general practitioners (GPs) who provide community-based palliative care, caring@home has developed 2 new, free education activities.
GPs can review their care of patients with life-limiting illnesses through a new ‘end-of-life planning mini audit’ continuing professional development (CPD) activity.
Ideal for GPs working in palliative care, aged care, and chronic disease management, the mini audit guides users through a self-assessment of their management approach for 3 current or past patients.
GPs caring for home-based palliative care patients can review their knowledge of the use of core medicines used to manage common terminal care symptoms, as well as the relevant legal constraints and protections, through the ‘management of pain and respiratory secretions’ and ‘management of anxiety and emesis’ CPD activities.
About the end-of-life planning mini audit CPD activity
The activity incorporates the Prompts for End-of-Life Planning (PELP) Framework to help guide reflection on audit findings and identify potential improvements to your current practices.
The activity is formally accredited and offers 30 minutes of educational CPD and 2.5 hours of measuring outcomes CPD.
The mini audit for end-of-life planning supports GPs to:
confidently recognise patients who may benefit from end-of-life planning, ensuring timely and appropriate conversations
strengthen the quality and clarity of end-of-life discussion documentation to support coordinated care
apply the PELP Framework to review and enhance care planning at key phases
reflect on current approaches and implement improvements aligned with best-practice standards.

About the ‘management of pain and respiratory secretions’ and ‘management of anxiety and emesis’ terminal care CPD activities
This activity requires GPS to read and review one or both clinical summaries and complete a quiz.
These activities are formally accredited and offer 30 minutes of educational CPD and 30 minutes of reviewing performance CPD.
