What is Quality Improvement?

Quality improvement (QI) is a system of monitoring and refining processes to improve coordination of care and deliver better health outcomes for patients.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) defines continuous quality improvement as:

…an ongoing activity undertaken within a general practice with its purpose being to monitor, evaluate or improve the quality of health care services provided to patients.

The 3 quality improvement (QI) questions to ask

There are 3 key questions to assist you with your QI activities:

  1. What are you trying to accomplish?
(This question helps you to set a goal.)

  2. How will you know that change is an improvement?
(This question helps you develop measures to track your goal.)

  3. What changes can you make that will result in an improvement?
(This question helps you to identify the ideas you could develop to achieve your goal.)

An example might be:

Q1: What are you trying to accomplish?

Q2: How will you know that change is an improvement?

Q3. What changes can you make that will result in an improvement?
